I’d thought I’d take this Monday, while I’m sitting at work reading all of my friends’ Tweets and Facebook statuses about how AMAZING this weather is and how AWESOME it is to have the day off, to share my favorite happy hour spots in San Diego.
And hopefully I’ll be at one of them tonight.
After the jump, the deets on the deals. Read the rest of this entry »
If you ever find yourself in Morgan Hill (squeezed between Gilroy, Garlic Capital of the World, and San Jose, home of the Sharks and the Winchester Mystery House), be sure to stop by Guglielmo Winery on East Main Ave., across from Live Oak High School. Read the rest of this entry »
The second winery we went to was highly recommended by Ryker’s mom. The winery, Mission Hill Family Estate, is located on the West Bank of the Okanagan. It was kind of drizzly while we took the tour, but it still had a beautiful view of the valley. Read the rest of this entry »
Since we couldn’t watch the second presidential debate Tuesday night without an ELITE snack
, we picked up a great wine and cheese combo at Discover Wines. The wine we chose comes from Blasted Church Vineyards (the store behind the name isn’t as scandalous as it sounds), and it is a blend of Ehrenfelser, Pinot Gris/Grigio, Riesling and Gewurztraminer called Hatfield’s Fuse. The lady helping us out recommended pairing it with an aged Gouda and a rosemary/Parmesan cracker made by a local chef. The saltiness of the Gouda paired excellently with the sweetness of the wine, but the crackers were a bit too flavorful and salty, next time I would have picked a less imposing cracker.
On Monday we drove right up the street from Ryker’s house to Summerhill Pyramid Winery. Once up there, we had a gorgeous view of the Okanagan valley (on the video, Ryker’s house is to the right of his big white barn). Besides being Canada’s largest organic vineyard, Summerhill is also known for its pyramid. Read the rest of this entry »
On our first real day in Kelowna, Sunday, we stopped by Kelowna Land & Orchard‘s Farm Store to pick up some apples. This is one of the first companies, after tobacco, that established itself in the Okanagan region, at around the turn of the century. When we stop by, there is a pumkin patch, dried fruit, fresh apples and apple cider from Raven Ridge Cidery. We did a quick tasting of three sweet iced ciders: Fuji, Braeburn and Granny Smith. My favorite was the Braeburn, Ryker’s was the Granny Smith. Iced cider is made in a similar method as ice wine, by pressing frozen apples instead of frozen grapes.
