Mac n’ Cheese: A Love Story

Lobster Mac and Cheese - ranchandcoast.com

My dear friend Heather at treatstoshare.wordpress.com just pointed out on her blog Martha Stewart’s macaroni and cheese photo gallery, which includes 15 different glorious recipes for possibly my favorite food on the planet.

Because baking/cooking is an overwhelming, messy and stressful experience for me…I leave mac and cheese to the pros (which yes, includes Stouffer’s). As I mentioned a while back, two of my favorite San Diego spots to dive into the cheesy goodness are Urban Solace in North Park and Cafe Chloe in East Village.

Cafe Chloe’s macaroni with crispy pancetta and bleu d’auvergne gratin is so addictive I can’t go there without getting it. And Urban Solace, a comfort food haven, has an incredible New York white cheddar mac n’ cheese, complete with caramelized bacon and charred cherry tomatoes.

But what really knocked my socks off was the lobster mac and cheese with shallots, brandy, dijon and truffle oil (kill me now) that I had during Restaurant Week at Dussini downtown, right before it was transformed back to the painfully generic, kids screaming debacle that is the Old Spaghetti Factory. Ugh.

But thank goodness the OSF owners kept the bar upstairs the same, renaming it Dussini Loft Bar and retaining its prized offering – the lobster mac and cheese, packed with huge chunks of sweet lobster with creamy, truffle-y cheese. Hallelujah! [Check it out, I even found the recipe online!]Now I need to mosey over there during happy hour and try some of the other tantalizing bar menu items, such as pomme frites, citrus marinated grilled prawns and calamari fritti.

On the downside, I recently tried the 5-cheese macaroni at Maryjane’s Coffee Shop in the Hard Rock Hotel downtown and was VERY disappointed. It was practically flavorless and the cheese was soupy.

Next up, I want to try the jalapeno mac and cheese at downtown eatery Neighborhood.

This reminds me I need to start working on my own version….I don’t like it that I haven’t mastered something as basic as Mac and Cheese…

[...] Café Chloe (Mon.-Thurs. 4-6) – East Village: My picks would be the $4 pommes frites with trio of dips (best fries in town), the $5 tarte flambée (I’m a big fan of anything that includes bacon and caramelized onions), and the $5 macaroni and pancetta gratin (I believe I’ve mentioned it before, like here and here).
